At Turrun Primary School, we are commitment to fostering excellence in Literacy for all our students. We prioritise the development of strong fundamental Literacy skills through an explicit teaching approach. Current research highlights that explicit teaching is the most effective method for helping students become fluent, accurate, and expressive readers; confident, creative writers; and proficient spellers. Our structured and knowledge rich English program is aligned with the Victorian Curriculum and supported by a range of evidence-based approaches including principles from the Science of Reading.

The English Core Component supports our students to build knowledge, strengthen their reading comprehension and become accurate and fluent writers through a knowledge rich, and diverse curriculum.
To help our students comprehend the texts they are reading, they need more than just brief exposure to a single book on a topic. Instead, students should immerse themselves in the topic over an extended period, encountering key vocabulary and concepts repeatedly. This ongoing exposure fosters deeper understanding.
Encouraging students to actively write about their learning is one of the most effective ways to solidify this knowledge.
